Powered Industrial Trucks

Overview

Powered Industrial Trucks (PITs)are present throughout Notre Dame campus and are used and operated by a number of University staff.  The University recognizes that there are a number of potential hazards associated with the use of PITs.  The University's program is based on OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.178 Powered Industrial Trucks and is designed to ensure that PITs are operated in a consistent and safe manner.

Training Requirements

To become authorized to operate a PIT, employees must successfully complete a classroom session on PIT safety and a PIT familiarization session for the category of PIT they will be operating. Employees are not permitted to operate PITs they are not approved for.  Retraining must occur every 3 years. Please contact Risk Management and Safety to coordinate PIT Training.  The classroom portion of PIT training will be transitioned into eNDeavor in the future. 

Contractor Requirements

Contractors who are bidding a job must take considerations for material and equipment delivery and provide a PIT and trained operator. Contractor personnel should not be using Notre Dame PITs.
