Overhead Crane and Hoist
Overview
Overhead cranes are present throughout the Notre Dame campus and are used and operated by a number of University employees. Overhead crane and hoist safety applies to departments who own and operate cranes and hoists and is designed to ensure equipment is operated and maintained in a safe manner. Examples of cranes include overhead cranes, gantry cranes, and jib cranes
Written Program
Training Requirements
Personnel must attend overhead crane and hoist training before operating equipment. Training includes a classroom/online portion and a hands-on familiarization with the crane or hoist. The classroom portion can be completed within eNDeavor. The course tile is: "RMS_Overhead Crane and Hoist_Classroom Training - 2015". Risk Management and Safety provides the hands-on training and will document completion. Overhead Crane and Hoist Training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.
Contractor Requirements
Contractors who are bidding jobs at UND must make considerations for material and equipment delivery and provide a crane and trained crane operator if using this equipment. Notre Dame department managers / supervisors may allow their crane to be used for a contractor job. Under these circumstances the department manager must give permission and a qualified Notre Dame employee must perform the job of crane operator.

A third party inspection must occur for all University owned cranes on an annual basis. Please contact Hoosier Crane regarding crane inspection or repairs.
