Forklift

Overview

Forklifts are present throughout Notre Dame campus and are used and operated by a number of University staff.  The University recognizes that there are a number of potential hazards associated with the use of forklifts.  The University's program is based on OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.178 Powered Industrial Trucks and is designed to ensure that forklifts are operated in a consistent and safe manner.

Training Requirements

To become authorized to operate a forklift, employees must successfully complete a classroom session on forklift safety and a forklift familiarization session for the category of forklift they will be operating. Employees are not permitted to operate forklifts they are not approved.  Retraining must occur every 3 years. Please contact Risk Management and Safety to coordinate Forklift Training.  The classroom portion of forklift training will be transitioned into complyND in the future. 

Contractor Requirements

Contractors who are bidding a job must take considerations for material and equipment delivery and provide a forklift and trained operator. Contractor personnel should not be using Notre Dame forklifts.
